Silent Night

This tutorial was written by me on December 12th, 2012.  You will need the following supplies:

Scrap kit: I used a gorgeous kit by Tootypup Scraps called "White November".  Please visit Susan's blog HERE for links to her stores.  Thank you for this lovely kit Susan!

Tube: I used the beautiful artwork of Renee Lavoie.  This tube is entitled "Silver Fairy" and is stunning!  You can purchase Renee's tubes at PSP Tube Stop, you must have a license to use.

Template: I used Winter Template #1 by Twinky.  Download from her blog HERE.

Mask: I used mask #22 from Moonbeams & Spiderwebs.

Filter: VanDerLee Snowflakes, HERE.

Font: I used SnagglePuss, a pay font.  If you don't have this font, try Aquarelle instead.

~~ Remember to save often! ~~

Place the mask in your PSP mask folder or a folder of your choice.

Open the template in PSP, duplicate and close the original.

Delete the following layers: Snowflakes in Winter, Black Stars2 and Black Stars.

Activate Frame 3 and merge down twice.  Rename this layer "Frames".

Activate Frame Background 3 and merge down twice.  Rename this layer "Frame Background".

Change the canvas size to 900 x 700 using these settings:

Add a new raster layer and send to the bottom.  Flood fill with white.

Activate the Background layer.  Select all, float and defloat.  From the kit, open Paper 7 and resize 70%.  Copy and paste as a new layer and arrange within the selection.  Invert the selection and tap delete.  Deselect and delete original layer.

Activate the Snowflakes layer; duplicate and flip.  Apply a drop shadow to each layer, I used H&V 2, Opacity 62, Blur 10.

Activate the Frame Background layer.  Select all, float and defloat.  Open paper 4 and resize 70%.  Copy and paste as a new layer and arrange as desired within the selection.  Invert the selection and tap delete.  Do not deselect.

Open SnowBridge_02a and resize 60%.  Copy and paste as a new layer and arrange within the selection.  Tap delete and deselect.  Apply drop shadow, I used H: -2, V: 0, Opacity 62, Blur 12.  Duplicate this layer 3 times for a total of 4.  Rename the layers Snow 1, Snow 2, Snow 3 and Snow 4.  Hide all but Snow 1.

Activate the Frame Background layer.  Select all, float and defloat.

Activate Snow 1.

Effects > VanDerLee Snowflakes

Select "Basic - Icy Blue" from the drop down menu beside Snow Colour and change the other settings to this:

Click OK.  Do not deselect.

Hide Snow 1, open and activate Snow 2.  Apply the Snowflakes filter again, using the same settings but changing the Random seed to 4.

Hide Snow 2, open and activate Snow 3.  Apply Snowflakes, this time changing the Random seed to 8.

Repeat for Snow 4, changing the Random seed to 12.  Deselect.  Hide Snow 4 and open Snow 1.

Activate the Frames layer.  Select all, float and defloat.  Open paper 4 again and resize 70%.  Copy and paste as a new layer and arrange as desired.  Tap delete and deselect; delete original layer.  Apply drop shadow, I used H&V 2, Opacity 62, Blur 10.

Activate White Stars and apply the drop shadow above.  Repeat for White Stars2.

Resize the tube 80%.  Copy and paste as a new layer and position on the left side.  See my tag for reference.  Apply drop shadow above.  Using the freehand selection tool, draw a selection around the bottom edge of the tube.  Selections > Modify > Inside/Outside Feather > Select "Both", Feather amount: 20.  Tap delete two or three times to soften the hard edge of your tube.  Deselect.

Now add your elements, I used:

PineTree_01: resize 70%; duplicate and resize 80%; duplicate again and mirror.  Arrange as desired above the white background layer.
PineCones_01: resize 15%, then 70%
LeafDeco_01: mirror, resize 25%; duplicate and free rotate 90 degrees left.
Mouse: resize 20%, then 85%
HandLantern_02: resize 25%
Birdie_02: resize 25%

Apply drop shadow above to all elements.

Activate the white background layer and add a new raster layer.  Select all.  Copy and paste Paper 1 into the selection.  Deselect.  Apply the mask and merge the mask group.  Use your raster deform tool to adjust the size and placement of the mask.

Type a saying at the top of your tag, I chose "All is calm, All is bright".  I used SnagglePuss, size 36, colour #3b4246.  Drop shadow using the settings above.

Add your name using the same font and colour, size 72.  Apply drop shadow.

Add all applicable copyright and license information.

Crop and resize your tag.

Time to animate!  Open Animation Shop.

Ensure that Snow 2, 3 and 4 layers are hidden and Snow 1 is open.

Edit > Copy Special > Copy Merged.

In Animation Shop:

Edit > Paste > As New Animation

Back in PSP, hide Snow 1 and open Snow 2.  Edit > Copy Special > Copy Merged.

In AS: Edit > Paste > After Current Frame.

Follow these steps for Snow 3 and 4.

In AS: Edit > Select All.

Animation > Frame Properties > change the display time to 23.

Animation > View to see your tag in action.

Save as a gif and you're finished!

I'd love to see your results, email me HERE.

Hugs, Carol
