Winter Magic (PTU)

(Click tag to see full-size image)

Winter Magic

This tutorial was written by me on December 9th, 2010 and is the result of my own ideas.  Any resemblance to any other tutorial is purely coincidental and unintentional.

PSP Version used: X2, but should work in other versions.

This tutorial assumes you have a good working knowledge of PSP and Animation Shop.

Supplies Needed

Scrap kit of choice: I used a gorgeous kit by Gina's Gems Scraps called Winter Magic.  This beautiful kit is chock full of gorgeous winter elements and breathtaking papers, my tag is made entirely of elements from the kit.  You can get it from Butterfly Blush.  Thank you so much Gina!

Mask of choice: I used one of Vaybs wonderful masks, #79, download from her blog HERE.

Silver Stars animation, which I've made available HERE.  If this is your animation, please email me so I can give proper credit or remove it, thank you!

Plug-in used: Eye Candy Nature; Snow Drift.

Font of choice: I used Shimmer Bold.

Ready ... set ... let's make a new tag!

Place the mask in your PSP masks folder or a folder of your choice.

Open a new image, 800 x 700, white background.

From the kit, open the Bench and resize 80%.  Copy and paste as a new layer, move down toward the bottom of the canvas.  Apply a drop shadow of choice: I used H&V 2, Opacity 47, Blur 8.

Open the Birdhouse, resize 30%, then 85%.  Copy and paste as a new layer, move to the right of the bench.  Drop shadow.

We're going to add a post to the birdhouse.  Open the Icicles, and using the freehand selection tool, carefully draw a selection around the middle post and copy the selection.  Deselect and close the element.

Paste as a new layer on your tag and resize 50%.  Free rotate right 90 degrees, move below the birdhouse and erase the excess.  Drop shadow.  Activate the birdhouse layer and merge down.

Open Berries3, resize 30%.  Copy and paste as a new layer and move to the bottom of the post.  Use your eraser to remove the bottom bit of the stem.  Duplicate and mirror, position the copy above the original.  Merge down and drop shadow.

Open Word Art 1 and resize 50%.  Copy and paste as a new layer, move to the top of the tag.  Drop shadow.

Open the Snowman, resize 50%.  Copy and paste as a new layer and move to the left of the bench.  Move the snowman below the bench layer and position as shown in my tag.  Drop shadow.

Activate the background layer and add a new raster layer.  Copy and paste a paper of choice into the selection.  Deselect.  Use the raster deform tool to move the paper up from the bottom a bit, like this:

Using the rectangle selection tool, draw a selection around the bottom half of the paper, not the entire canvas.

Apply Eye Candy Nature; Snow Drift.  Under the Settings tab, choose Small, smooth white mound and change settings under the Basic tab to this:

You should end up with something that looks like this:

Apply the mask to your paper layer.  Under the Orientation heading, make sure you choose "Fit to Layer" instead of "Fit to Canvas" before you apply.  Merge the mask group.  I added a light drop shadow to the masked layer to make the edges more defined, but this is up to you.

Add the rest of your elements, adding drop shadow as you go:

Star Tree 2: resize 65%
Star Tree 4: resize 60%
Frosty Pine Cones: resize 20%, free rotate 50 degrees left, sharpen
ButterBow 3: resize 20%, free rotate right 20 degrees, sharpen
Icy Wagon Wheel: resize 25%
Snowy Berry Branch: resize 20%, then 85%
Snow Flower and Snowflakes Deco 2: resize 32%

Make sure you're happy with the placement of everything, then hide the background and masked layers and merge visible.  Resize the merged layer 90% and arrange on the snow drift.  Open the hidden layers.

Activate the masked paper/snow drift layer.  Copy and paste Cloud and Flower Deco as a new layer and arrange to your satisfaction.  Use the eraser to get rid of any extra flowers at the edges.  Drop shadow.

Now crop and resize your tag.  Add your name and use the snow drift plug-in once again to add a bit of snow to it.

Under the Settings tab, choose Small, First Flakes and change the settings under the Basic tab to this:

Drop shadow.

Now let's add the animation!

Right click on your tag and choose "Copy Merged".

Open Animation Shop.

Right click on the workspace and choose "Paste As A New Animation".

Open the silver stars animation, note that it has 11 frames.  We need to add the same number of frames to our tag.  Right click on the tag and choose "Duplicate Selected".  Continue doing this until you have 11 frames.

Edit > Select All

Activate the stars animation.  Edit > Select All > Edit > Copy.

Activate your tag.  Edit > Paste > Into Selected Frame.  Arrange the stars where you like and left click to place.  Continue doing this until you've added as many stars as you like.  If you make a mistake, simply click undo and try again.

View > Animation to check your work.  Once you're satisfied, save as a gif and you're all done!

I hope you enjoy your new tag, thanks for trying my tutorial!

Hugs, Carol
