Santa's Comin' (FTU, Scrap only tut)

(Click on tag to see full-size image)

Santa's Comin'

This tutorial was written by me on December 1st, 2010 and is the result of my own ideas.  Any resemblance to any other tutorial is purely coincidental and unintentional.

PSP Version used: X2, but should work in other versions.

This tutorial assumes you have a good working knowledge of PSP and Animation Shop.

Supplies Needed

Scrap kit of choice: I used an awesome FTU kit called "Holly Jolly Christmas" by Heike of Fantasy Dreams Designzs.  This kit is beautiful and has lots of wonderful papers and elements!  My tag was made entirely using elements from the kit.  Thank you sooo much for sharing it Heike!!  Download link is on her blog HERE.  Please be sure to leave a thank you for Heike when you grab it, it's only fair to acknowledge hard work that's freely shared. :-)

Mask of choice: I used Mask 80 by Designs by Vaybs, available HERE.

Plug-in needed: Vanderlee Snowflakes, available HERE.

Font of choice: I used Carattere.

Animation Shop

Let's make a tag!

Put the mask in your PSP masks folder or a folder of your choice.

Open a new image, 750 x 750, white background.

We're going to create the look of wallpaper and a carpet.  Add a new raster layer and select all.  Open a paper of choice and paste into selection.  Deselect.

Add a new raster layer and using the rectangle selection tool, draw out a selection in the bottom third of the canvas.  Flood fill the selection with a colour from the kit, I chose #a0496d.  Deselect and merge down.  Apply the mask to the merged layer and merge the mask group.  Depending on the paper you chose, you should have something that looks like this:
Open E27 and resize 45%.  Copy and paste as a new layer, move to the top left of the paper layer.  Open E15 and resize 23%.  Copy and paste as a new layer, move below the window frame, merge the window layer down.  Using the freehand selection tool, draw a selection around the window frame, like this:

Open Paper 5 or 6, depending on your preference, resize 40% and arrange the scene at the bottom of the paper within the window.  Invert selection and tap delete.  Deselect.

Apply a drop shadow of choice to the window, I used H&V 2, Opacity 55, Blur 7.  Now duplicate the window layer twice, for a total of three.  Rename each layer Window 1, Window 2 and Window 3.  Hide Window 2 and 3.  We'll come back to these later.

Duplicate the paper layer twice for a total of three.  Rename these layers Snow 1, Snow 2 and Snow 3.  Leave Snow 1 open and hide the other two, we'll come back to this later.

Open EI18, copy and paste as a new layer, move to the right side of the window.  Drop shadow.

Open EI12, copy and paste as a new layer, move to the left of the tree and below the window.  Drop shadow.

Add your other elements:

EI21: resize 50%
EI14: resize 40%
EI13: resize 35%, mirror
EI25: resize 45%
EI30: resize 30%
EI31: resize 45%
EI11: resize 10% (I used this to decorate the "Santa's Comin'" saying at the bottom.)

Drop shadow all the elements you added.  Make sure you're happy with the placement of everything.

Hide these layers: Background, mask, Snow 1 and Window 1.  Merge visible all other layers.

Unhide the hidden layers and activate Snow 1.  Select all, float, then defloat.  Apply the Snowflakes plug-in using these settings:

Amount: 25
Minimum Size: 1
Maximum Size: 20
Hardness: 75
Transparency: 0
Snow color: Basic - Snow
Random Seed: 0

Hide Snow 1 and activate Snow 2, apply Snowflakes using the same settings, but change the Random Seed to 5.  Repeat for Snow 3, changing the Random Seed to 10.  Deselect.

Activate Window 1.  Using the magic wand with the Mode set to Add (Shift), Match Mode: RGB value, Tolerance: 15, Feather: 0, Contiguous and Anti-alias checked and Outside selected, click on all the green and blue-green light bulbs.  Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast > Set Brightness to 50 and Contrast to 0, click OK.

Hide Window 1 and activate Window 2.  Brightness: -50, Contrast 0, click OK.  Leave Window 3 as is.  Deselect.

Activate Window 1 again, this time select all the purple lights.  Brightness: -50, Contrast 0
Window 2: As is.
Window 3: Brightness: 50, Contrast: 0

Back to Window 1: Select all the pink lights.  Leave Window 1 as is.
Window 2: Brightness: 50, Contrast: 0
Window 3: Brightness: -50, Contrast: 0

Now it's time to add your name and any saying you'd like.  Also a credit to the kit designer would probably be much appreciated.  :-)

It's time to animate!

Make sure Snow 1 and Window 1 are open and the other ones are hidden.  Right click on your tag and choose Copy Merged.

Open Animation Shop.

Right click on the workspace and choose Paste As A New Animation.

Back to PSP, hide Snow 1 and Window 1, open Snow 2 and Window 2.  Right click and copy merged.

Back in AS, right click on the tag and choose Paste > Paste After Current Frame.  Repeat these steps for the final frame (Snow 3 and Window 3).

Edit > Select All.  Animation > Frame Properties > change to 18 (or whatever you prefer).

View > Animation to see your tag in action!

Now resize your tag and save as a gif.  You're all finished!

Thanks for trying my tut, and be sure to send me your results, I'd love to show them off!

Hugs, Carol
